How Maui slowed the sun.
Long ago the sun moved fast across the sky. The days became shorter and the nights became longer. Most of the work couldn’t be done in one day. No one had thought to do anything about it. But one day Maui got sick of it. Maui had a plan on how to slow down the sun. Maui told his brothers that he was going to slow the sun, He told them that he needed their help. The brothers said they would help him. Maui and his brothers collected the flax for the ropes that they were going to tie down the sun with to slow it down. The ropes were finished. They set off to where the sun rose in the mornings. They only travelled at night so the sun didn’t know they were coming for it. As they came closer the bushes became more and more dried out the earth under their feet warm and nearly hot. Maui knew they were close. It wasn’t long until they reached the great pit from where the sun would rise. Maui told his brothers to build a wall out of rocks and clay. As the sun rose Maui shouted to his brothers “throw the ropes!” They held the sun down with all their strength while Maui hit the sun for it to slow down. They did that for a while and then they let the sun go. From then on the sun travelled across the sky slowly.

Friend Not Foe
Bullying isn’t a good thing to deal with nor to do.
But before I get started, be honest, who has been bullied?
Many people get bullied. Everywhere you go there's bullying. There's no hiding from it.
There’s always a reason why there’s bullying. Right? It’s probably that there are problems in the bully’s family or they’re getting bullied as well, so they are taking it out on other people to make themselves feel better etc etc
It’s bad when you go home and you're really upset and take it out on your family. Can I tell you something? It isn’t going to end well! Sometimes people keep the bullying to themselves and it starts to affect their life a lot. This can lead to really bad things.
How I know this is because it’s happened to me many times before.
At every school I have been to, I have been bullied or people I know have been bullied. I have been to three different schools and can share three different stories. Each one was either about my friends or about my height. I won’t tell you everything about the stories today but I’ll mention some of the main things about each one.
The First was that I was apparently too short, but it was just because everyone was too tall. The Second thing, was about my two best friends. Both of them have problems in their lives, not too major, but they do. The one started saying mean things to the other one and used her disabilities to push her around. I didn’t tell anyone because I thought that it would go away, but it didn’t.
It carried on for a while until I actually spoke to someone. It changed a little bit, but not much. This went on for the whole year. I was at that school for about two years until we moved to Waikanae. It carried on even after I left. Until one of them changed schools. The third was also about my friends but not as bad as the last one. I’m not going to mention any names but this person said that I was taking away her friend’s. She used that very same thing against me every time she got in a fight with her friends and said that it was my fault. That did stop after about three terms.
My point about my speech is that bullying is that it can change a person's perspective on life of being happy to being messed up. I know that it sounds bad but it’s true. We need to make a difference. Let’s start by treating people the way we want to be treated. Think twice before you speak.
Next time you make fun of/ tease someone put yourself in their shoes. How would u feel? What effect would it have on that person's life. Speak life not death. Positive not negative. Smile at someone today… Just because. It might save a person’s life.

The Beast
Ash-lee, Ava and Drenna
Humming gently above the water, the motor was groaning, two blades were slicing the water making the water foamy and a dark brown. The boat was gliding above the water going 250 mph. Beads of sweat were forming on our foreheads from the thick hot air entering our lungs and back out our noses and mouths. I ruffled my hair and looked at the deep dark depths below, a shadow went past, a big long black figure, I staggered backwards and screamed to my crew ‘’TURN THE MOTOR ON!!’’ The shadowy figure was rising and bubbles were steaming from under the dark murky water. I shot a quick glimpse of the beast that my crew had lured in, It had spikes down its back and pimply skin, the beast's jaws were open wide and looked as sharp as fresh razor blades that could pierce your skin with a tiny amount of pressure, the gnashers from the beast were the only white in all of the brownness, It’s tail was trailing behind it thrashing sideways and making more bubbles rise, I was engulfed in this beasts majestic ways and all its details, The beast had picked up speed and was coming towards the bubbling surface, again I screamed “ QUICK TURN ON THE MOTOR, IT’S GOING TO COME UP TO THE SURFACE!!’’ at this point we were chewing off our fingernails hoping we will survive.
Frightened we carried on riding along the smooth water making small waves. BANG! Our boat stops, we try switching it on but it doesn’t work. We look around nothing but water. We stand there looking around for something to come, suddenly the boat moves like something smashed into it. Sounds of splashing , our hearts pumping blood around our body at lightning speed. We move very slowly to look over the edge.
The Beast turned around and glided through the water with ease, turning around it slowly prepared itself to launch out of the water, it disappeared, we took one last look over the ed….

Work Of Term 1/2
This term we have been looking at ways to make our writing more interesting for the reader.
We have used the following criteria to guide us:
- Changing the word order of a sentence
- Using literary devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification
- Using specific verbs and adjectives
- Using show, don’t tell techniques
- Using different sentence beginnings and lengths
Here are some examples of my writing this term.
Show don’t tell
Excited-I was very excited to go to the circus.-Butterflies in my stomach. I’m buzzing with excitement. Giggling for no reason. Impatiently waiting for everyone to start moving closer to the entrance.
Sad- I was very sad because someone in my family died.- My eyes balling with tears unable to stop. Thinking about all the happy times what we did together made me cry harder so I was unable to breathe.
Angry-I was angry because my brother got me in trouble.-Furious enough that I could tip over a car but since my brother got me in trouble for not doing something I didn’t do. It feels like I’m ready to burst out with anger.
Writing to music
The escape
I slowly crawl low down to the floor. Being at quite as I can. I listen out for guards marching around the castle looking for me. “You, stop!” someone shouts. I get up of the floor. I run as fast as I can. There is barely any light. I Bump into someone twice my size. He grabs my arms, he takes me to a seler. I break free. I run for my life. I see the light of the sun I run and don’t stop. “I shall never return” I say to myself.
The tired boy
Tiredly he walks around the zoo. He couldn’t get any sleep the night before because he was so excited about the surprise that his mum told him about. So he went to bed early that night but while his younger brother was sleeping he was awake thinking about what they were going to be doing and where they’re going. Trapped in the zoo he sits on a bench looking at all the animals that he had never seen in person. He knew most of the names of the animals but some of them he thought that they were extraordinary. Having witnessed these new animals, he added them to his animal research essay that he was doing because he loved animals. Loudly he yawns, everyone looks at him. He laughs at himself with some other children. Embarrassed, his mum , father and brothers faces all look red but he isn’t. He is just sitting there and he looks all proud of himself. Slowly but quickly he starts falling asleep not worried about the world.
My Rage
Mum raced into my room CLAMPING her fists together like she’s going to PUNCH someone or something , she looked at me with a MASSIVE frown on her face, she says AGGRESSIVELY “ You didn’t pack away the DISHES like I told you To! ” My eyes wider than ever.
